BADAS Portfolio Requirements

Your BADAS Portfolio in its totality will consist of the following:

  • 10 examples of your original work (across multiple categories)
  • 500-word essay prompt
  • A Brief Personal Video
  • Resume/CV

Original Work

The Digital Worlds Institute is looking for portfolios that represent foundational cross-disciplinary skills across three primary areas detailed below.

All applicants will submit a portfolio of their own creative work; this work could have been completed as part of your previous educational experience or could also be original work completed outside of the classroom. Applicants must include a title and description for each submission, and detail their role and method used in the creation and development of each.

Your representative collection of original work should be exactly 10 pieces comprised of examples of your work chosen from the three areas below. While most applicants may not have equal proficiencies in each of these areas, it is highly recommended that students submit a diverse portfolio of their work that includes samples from each of the areas detailed below.

Digital Design

This may include examples of:

  • Digital illustrations/painting (e.g. Photoshop, Illustrator, Painter, etc.)
  • Game assets (e.g. Photoshop, Illustrator)
  • Character Design (e.g. Photoshop, Maya)
  • 3D modeling and textures (e.g. Maya, Blender, Substance Painter, ZBrush)
  • Photography (e.g. Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator)
  • Graphic design (e.g. Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator)

NOTE: Do not submit “project files” (for example a Photoshop .psd file). Submit the executable or high-resolution output file instead (for example a .jpg or a .png made from a Photoshop project, or a .mov or .mp4 file made from the Premiere or Final Cut project files).

Time-Based Media

This may include examples of:

  • 2D or 3D animation (e.g. Maya, Flash, Toon Boom, After Effects)
  • Video production (e.g. Premiere, Final Cut)
  • Motion graphics (e.g. After Effects, Cinema 4D)
  • Audio (e.g. Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Audacity)

NOTE: Do not submit “project files” (for example a Photoshop .psd file). Submit the executable or high-resolution output file instead (for example a .jpg or a .png made from a Photoshop project, or a .mov or .mp4 file made from the Premiere or Final Cut project files).

Interactive Media & Programming

This may include examples of:

  • Video game design and development (e.g. Unity, Unreal, JavaScript, C#, C++)
  • Web-based/mobile app design and development (e.g. Dreamweaver, HTML 5, Java, Swift)
  • UI/UX (Axure, Sketch, OmniGraffle, InDesign)

If you do not yet have coding examples, complete one or more Lynda.com tutorials below. These tutorials will provide you with the necessary knowledge to succeed in our program. You are welcome to include assignments from these tutorials in your portfolio submission as long as you follow the instructions above.

Programming Foundations: Data Structures

Important Information for All Applicants: While most applicants may not have equal proficiencies in all areas of digital arts and coding, your portfolio submission demonstrates your creativity and the current state of your foundational skills to the Digital Worlds Admissions Committee. The portfolio submission should not be an overwhelming process, but rather an incentive to feature your current state of creative and technical accomplishment. Use this process as an opportunity to showcase your talents and strengths while learning and gaining a few skills along the way.
